Having awakened invincible courage and dispelled all inner fears in the solar plexus through Sri Chandraghanta, our spiritual energy now ascends to the profound realm of the heart. On the fourth day of Navaratri, we worship the radiant creator of the universe: Sri Devi Kushmanda.
Her name is beautifully composed of three Sanskrit words: Ku (a little), Ushma (warmth or energy), and Anda (the cosmic egg). She is the supreme Divine Mother who created the entire universe with a mere flash of Her gentle, radiant smile.
The Divine Form and Sacred Puranic History
According to the Puranas, before the dawn of creation, the universe was an absolute void—a boundless expanse of infinite darkness. There was no time, no space, and no existence. Into this eternal silence, the Divine Mother manifested as an infinite, formless light. With a subtle, divine smile, She generated a “little warmth” (Ku-Ushma), incubating the cosmic egg (Anda) and bringing the entire universe into manifestation.
Because She is the ultimate source of all light, heat, and life force (Prana), Her abode is said to be within the core of the Sun God (Surya) himself. She alone possesses the power and luminosity to reside within the fiery center of the sun, directing its cosmic energy to sustain all planetary systems.
Sri Kushmanda is depicted with eight arms, earning Her the name Ashtabhuja Devi. She holds a kamandalu (water pot), bow, arrow, lotus, a jar of immortal nectar (Amrita), discus, and a mace. In Her eighth hand, she holds a sacred rosary (Japamala) that is capable of granting all the eight Siddhis (occult powers) and nine Nidhis (types of divine wealth) to Her devotees. She rides a majestic lion, symbolizing Her absolute mastery over Dharma and supreme valor.
Esoteric and Spiritual Significance
In the subtle anatomy of the yogic system, Sri Kushmanda governs the Anahata Chakra (the Heart Chakra), located at the center of the chest.
Ascending to the Anahata Chakra marks a profound turning point in sadhana. The lower three chakras deal heavily with survival, worldly desires, and individual willpower. Entering the heart center represents the dawn of universal, unconditional love, deep compassion, and spiritual expansion.
Esoterically, the “warmth” (Ushma) of Mother Kushmanda represents the healing, vitalizing Prana that dissolves blockages in the heart. She destroys deeply rooted sorrows, grief, and physical ailments, replacing them with a boundless, radiant vitality. When the sadhaka meditates upon Her in the heart center, the individual soul begins to recognize its undeniable connection to the cosmic whole. Just as She birthed the universe from the void, She helps the spiritual seeker birth a new, enlightened state of consciousness from the stillness of meditation.
Today’s Sadhana and Meditation
For your Day 4 practice, bring your complete awareness to the center of your chest, feeling a soft, expansive, and healing light blossoming as you follow these steps:
- Seat: Sit on a woollen mat in a quiet place. If sitting on a chair, ensure a woollen mat is placed beneath your feet.
- Direction and Posture: Face East or North. Maintain a comfortable position with your spine kept perfectly straight.
- Centering: Chant OM nine times to balance the energy centers in your body. Follow this with deep, mindful breathing for 3 to 5 minutes, focusing entirely on the rhythmic expansion and contraction of your chest.
- Visualization: Close your eyes and visualize the eight-armed Divine Mother Kushmanda, radiating a warm, golden-orange light that rivals the brilliance of a hundred million suns. See Her seated majestically on Her lion, residing peacefully within the lotus of your heart chakra. Mentally offer Her your devotion and surrender.
- Mantra Japa: Chant the following specific mantra for Day 4 either 108 times (one full mala) or continuously for 15 to 30 minutes:
Oṃ Aiṃ Hrīṃ Klīṃ Śrīṃ Kūṣmāṇḍā Durgāyai Namaḥ Oṃ Hrīṃ Duṃ Durgāyai Namaḥ ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं श्रीं कूष्माण्डा दुर्गायै नमः ॐ ह्रीं दुं दुर्गायै नमः
May the radiant Mother Kushmanda illuminate your heart, heal all sorrows, and fill your life with boundless divine energy and unconditional love.
