Lalitā Sahasranāma: Name #1 – Śrī-Mātā (The Sacred Mother)

The Lalitā Sahasranāma opens not with an abstract philosophical definition, but with a title of infinite tenderness and cosmic authority: Śrī-Mātā (श्रीमाता).

Before She is sovereign ruler or transcendent reality, She is the unconditional Mother of all that exists.

1. Linguistic & Spiritual Meaning

  • Śrī (श्री): Radiance, auspiciousness, wealth, liberation, and the supreme presence of Shakti.
  • Mātā (माता): Mother—She who conceives, nurtures, sustains, and ultimately protects Her creation.

Unlike worldly mothers whose care is limited by space and time, Śrī-Mātā is the origin of the entire cosmic manifestation (Brahmāṇḍa). Every soul, planet, and element draws its life force (Prāṇa) from Her divine lap.

2. Inner Contemplation for Daily Sādhana

  • Unconditional Refuge: Approaching the Divine as a child approaches a mother removes fear, guilt, and rigid ritual hesitation. You do not need perfection to turn to Her; you only need sincerity.
  • Cultivating Compassion: Recognizing Śrī-Mātā as the source of all living beings inspires non-violence (Ahiṁsā) and kindness toward every soul you encounter today.
