Having cultivated supreme spiritual discipline and emotional purification through Sri Brahmacharini, our sadhana now enters a dynamic phase. On the third day, we invoke the fierce, yet supremely compassionate form of the Divine Mother: Sri Devi Chandraghanta.
Her name is derived from the crescent moon (Chandra) she wears on Her forehead, which is shaped like a temple bell (Ghanta). She represents the perfect balance of supreme beauty and terrifying martial power, ready at all times to destroy the wicked and protect Her devotees.
The Divine Form and Sacred Puranic History
The manifestation of Sri Chandraghanta is intricately tied to the culmination of Mother Parvati’s severe penance. Pleased by Her unyielding devotion, Lord Shiva finally agreed to the marriage. However, true to His nature as the Lord of Ascetics, Shiva arrived at the royal palace of King Himavan for the wedding procession (baraat) in a truly terrifying state.
He appeared with matted hair, his body smeared with ash from the cremation grounds, wearing garlands of snakes and skulls. His procession consisted of ghosts, goblins, ghouls, and wild ascetics. Upon seeing this frightening spectacle, Queen Mainavati, the Mother’s earthly mother, fainted in sheer terror.
To prevent utter chaos and to gently intervene, the Divine Mother transformed Herself into the resplendent and powerful Sri Chandraghanta. In this glorious form, She is golden in complexion, possessing ten arms holding various weapons like the trident, mace, sword, and bow, while riding a fierce tiger. Despite Her martial readiness, Her countenance remains divinely serene.
It is vital to understand that there was no conflict or battle between Her and Lord Shiva. She approached Him purely with profound grace, devotion, and loving prayer. She gently requested Him to adopt a more charming and royal form for the sake of Her terrified earthly family. Deeply moved by Her devotion, Lord Shiva lovingly agreed and immediately transformed into Chandrashekhara—a breathtakingly handsome deity adorned with beautiful jewels. Thus, the marriage was completed in absolute cosmic harmony.
Esoteric and Spiritual Significance
In the subtle body, Sri Chandraghanta governs the Manipura Chakra (the Solar Plexus Chakra), located 2 fingerbreadths above the navel.
The Chandra (crescent moon) and Ghanta (bell) hold profound Tantric symbolism. The moon represents the Ida Nadi (the cooling lunar channel) and absolute mastery over the fluctuating mind, ensuring that the intense, fiery martial energy of the solar plexus is guided by a calm, compassionate intellect rather than blind reactivity. The bell represents Naad (the primordial cosmic vibration). Esoterically, the continuous ringing of the Ghanta acts as a sonic shield that cuts through the dense chatter of worldly thoughts (Vrittis) and instantly snaps the practitioner into a state of present awareness.
As our spiritual energy ascends to this center, we often face our deepest psychological fears, anxieties, and inner demons. Sri Chandraghanta is the ultimate protector in this realm. The terrible sound of Her moon-bell paralyzes and drives away these internal demons of lethargy, self-doubt, and worldly terrors. By invoking Her, we awaken immense courage, inner vitality, and spiritual leadership. She grants the sadhaka the bravery of a tiger to face life’s battles, while simultaneously keeping the heart overflowing with a mother’s compassion.
Today’s Sadhana and Meditation
For your Day 3 practice, bring your awareness to the solar plexus, feeling a radiant sun-like heat developing as you follow these steps:
- Seat: Sit on a woollen mat in a quiet place. If sitting on a chair, ensure a woollen mat is placed beneath your feet.
- Direction and Posture: Face East or North. Maintain a comfortable position with your spine kept perfectly straight.
- Centering: Chant OM nine times to balance the energy centers in your body. Follow this with deep, mindful breathing for 3 to 5 minutes to settle the mind.
- Visualization: Close your eyes and visualize the ten-armed Divine Mother Chandraghanta, radiant like pure gold and riding a tiger, at your Ajna Chakra (the space between the eyebrows). Mentally worship Her by offering fragrant flowers while chanting.
- Mantra Japa: Chant the following specific mantra for Day 3 either 108 times (one full mala) or continuously for 15 to 30 minutes:
Oṃ Aiṃ Hrīṃ Klīṃ Śrīṃ Candraghaṇṭā Durgāyai Namaḥ Oṃ Hrīṃ Duṃ Durgāyai Namaḥ ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं श्रीं चन्द्रघण्टा दुर्गायै नमः ॐ ह्रीं दुं दुर्गायै नमः
May the radiant Mother Chandraghanta dispel all your fears and awaken invincible courage within your spiritual heart.
