Navaratri Sadhana Day 6: Sri Devi Katyayani (October 16, 2026)

Divine Mother Sri Devi Katyayani
Divine Mother Sri Devi Katyayani

Having purified our consciousness and speech at the throat center through Sri Skandamata, our spiritual journey now ascends to the profound space between the eyebrows. On the sixth day of Navaratri, we worship the fierce, triumphant, and highly revered warrior form of the Divine Mother: Sri Devi Katyayani.

She is the ultimate destroyer of negative forces, cosmic imbalances, and inner ego, famously manifesting to annihilate the terrible demon Mahishasura.

The Divine Form and Sacred Puranic History

According to the Puranas, the great sage Katyayana performed intense penance for years with the desire to have the Divine Mother born as his daughter. Pleased with his devotion, and recognizing that the universe was being terrorized by the buffalo-demon Mahishasura, the holy trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) combined their immense cosmic energies. This unified, blazing light manifested as a magnificent Goddess. Because she was first worshipped by Sage Katyayana, and born as his daughter, she became known as Katyayani.

For sadhakas in Karnataka, this victorious manifestation resonates deeply through the sacred Sthala Purana of nearby Mysuru. While classical scriptures identify the radiant slayer of Mahishasura as Katyayani, the local tradition atop Chamundi Hill lovingly worships this identical Supreme Mother as Sri Chamundeshwari. She embodies the exact same cosmic energy that vanquished the demon, purified the land, and gave Mahishur (Mysuru) its name—a beautiful reminder that the Mother’s universal power and localized grace are one and the same.

Her radiant form shines with the brilliance of a thousand suns. She has four arms and rides a magnificent lion. In her upper left hand, she wields a gleaming sword (Chandrahasa), and in her lower left hand, she holds a sacred lotus flower. Her upper right hand is raised in the Abhaya Mudra (granting fearlessness), and her lower right hand is in the Varada Mudra (granting boons).

She represents the ultimate victory of divine light over the darkest ignorance. Though terrifying to demons and negative energies, to her devotees, she is an immensely compassionate mother who swiftly removes all obstacles.

Esoteric and Spiritual Significance

In the subtle anatomy of the yogic system, Sri Katyayani governs the Ajna Chakra (the Third Eye Chakra), located at the center of the forehead between the eyebrows.

Ascending to the Ajna Chakra marks a pivotal moment in the sadhaka’s spiritual evolution. This is the command center of intuition, higher wisdom, and clear vision. When the mind is stabilized here, the sadhaka transcends worldly illusions and completely surrenders to the Divine.

Esoterically, Mahishasura represents the stubborn, beastly human ego and deeply rooted ignorance. By meditating upon Katyayani at the Ajna Chakra, the sharp sword of her divine grace severs our inner demons—arrogance, anger, and delusion. She awakens profound clairvoyance, unshakeable willpower, and magnetic spiritual presence.

Today’s Sadhana and Meditation

For your Day 6 practice, bring your complete, undivided awareness to the Ajna Chakra (the space between your eyebrows), feeling an intense, golden-radiant light awakening as you follow these steps:

  • Seat: Sit on a woollen mat in a quiet place. If sitting on a chair, ensure a woollen mat is placed beneath your feet.
  • Direction and Posture: Face East or North. Maintain a perfectly straight spine, keeping your head, neck, and back in alignment.
  • Centering: Chant OM nine times, focusing the powerful vibration directly at your third eye. Follow this with 3 to 5 minutes of steady, rhythmic breathing.
  • Visualization: Close your eyes and visualize the four-armed, golden-hued Divine Mother Katyayani riding her lion. See her wielding the sword of wisdom to cut away your obstacles, while simultaneously blessing you with her right hands. Mentally place this blazing, protective form within your Ajna Chakra, feeling your intuition and inner clarity expanding.
  • Mantra Japa: Chant the following complete mantra either 108 times (one full mala) or continuously for 15 to 30 minutes, keeping the combined root Durga mantra structure:

Oṃ Aiṃ Hrīṃ Klīṃ Śrīṃ Kātyāyanī Durgāyai Namaḥ Oṃ Hrīṃ Duṃ Durgāyai Namaḥ
ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं श्रीं कात्यायनी दुर्गायै नमः ॐ ह्रीं दुं दुर्गायै नमः

May the fierce and loving Mother Katyayani destroy all your inner obstacles, awaken your profound spiritual vision, and guide you toward ultimate liberation.
